Dear Father, You are able to accomplish infinitely more than we might ask or think. May You place this book in the hands of the ones You know would be blessed by it. Use this story to bring encouragement to the dismayed heart, hope to the despairing one, trust to the shaken soul. May you banish fear, anxiety, and self-condemnation in the hearts of those who read this book. Bless this simple novel to bring joy, laughter, and treasured friends to those who need it. I thank You, Jesus, for the privilege of writing for You.

I pray that readers won’t be able to peel an orange, tuck a bulb into the soil, even put a load of whites into the washer, without rejoicing in the miracle of our convenient, modern-day lives. I also pray that Leora’s story–and the story of her community–will help readers understand that even the hardest crosses are easier to bear while surrounded by believers and friends who can help share the weight. Lastly, but perhaps most importantly, I pray the The Divide will encourage readers to contemplate the balance between having faith and taking action and will cause them to reflect on their faith journey and how they might deepen it by truly relying on the One who keeps our beautiful blue/green world spinning in orbit and that sacred breath filling our lungs.
