You must obey them in the land you are about to enter and occupy,\u00a0and you and your children and grandchildren must fear the\u00a0Lord\u00a0your God as long as you live. If you obey all his decrees and commands, you will enjoy a long life.\u00a0Listen closely, Israel, and be careful to obey. Then all will go well with you, and you will have many children in the land flowing with milk and honey, just as the\u00a0Lord, the God of your ancestors, promised you. Listen, O\u00a0Israel! The\u00a0Lord\u00a0is our God, the\u00a0Lord\u00a0alone. The Lord is our God, the Lord alone\u201d (Deuteronomy 6:4). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/wpmu3.northcentralus.cloudapp.azure.com\/nlt\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2019\/01\/BadlandsSmall.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3365\" width=\"177\" height=\"236\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wpmu3.northcentralus.cloudapp.azure.com\/nlt\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2019\/01\/BadlandsSmall.jpg 300w, https:\/\/wpmu3.northcentralus.cloudapp.azure.com\/nlt\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2019\/01\/BadlandsSmall-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 177px) 100vw, 177px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>In declaring the uniqueness of Israel\u2019s God, Moses was affirming what the Bible says from the beginning. \u201cIn the beginning God . . .\u201d\u2014not a god, or the gods, but God. This belief in one God lay at the heart of Israelite faith\u2014though sometimes they would forget that and so would be challenged by the prophets (e.g., 1 Kings 18:16-18; 2 Kings 17:7-20).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/wpmu3.northcentralus.cloudapp.azure.com\/nlt\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2019\/04\/CloudsSmall.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3534\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>In light of this affirmation of the uniqueness of God, Israel was called, first, to have no other gods (Deuteronomy 5:6-7) and not to make any idols that might lead them astray (4:15-19; 5:8-10), and second, to \u201clove the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your strength\u201d (6:5). Why? Because if there were no other gods, they need not keep anything in reserve to offer to them. Why?
