Christian writers everywhere, take heart! It may be discouraging at times that the J. K. Rowlings and Stephen Kings of the world get all the accolades while millions of writers go unsung, unrecognized. But know this: if you stay faithful to write what God directs you to write, there is no end to the impact you could have on human history.

Take Silas, for example—lead character of The Scribe, the newest novel in Francine Rivers’s best-selling Sons of Encouragement series. This gentle, humble man is positive proof that the pen is, indeed, mightier than the sword. Like the other books in the series, The Scribe tells the story of a lesser-known biblical character who nonetheless did great things for God. We owe Silas an enormous debt of gratitude for toiling quietly behind the scenes to record much of our New Testament scriptures, even as believers all around him were being silenced in the most awful ways. Even though Silas doesn’t take center stage in any of the narratives, God used him mightily to convey his eternal Word to people across the centuries.

The Scribe is the fifth and final novel in the Sons of Encouragement series. As much as the books continue to bless readers, writing them was a blessing for Francine as well. “I thoroughly enjoyed working on these stories and learned a great deal from each of these ‘lesser-known’ heroes of the Bible,” she says. “I hope you will enjoy the stories and use the discussion questions penned by my friend, Peggy Lynch. I know there are many more lessons and insights to be learned if you’re willing to see what God has to say to you through His Word.”

What’s next for Francine? She’s working hard on a new novel slated to be published by Tyndale in early 2009. The yet-to-be-titled novel will weave together historical and contemporary story lines and will focus on how the truth of Jesus Christ is revealed in four generations of mothers and daughters.
