Robin Lee Hatcher’s newest novel, The Victory Club, takes place on the American home front during World War II. But the story rings true for many readers today, here on the home front of the Iraq war, a.k.a. the Global War on Terror.

"We live in perilous times," Robin says. "When a nation is at war, it’s hard not to feel as if the world has spun entirely out of control. It’s hard not to be afraid, especially when someone we know and love is standing in harm’s way."

The story of The Victory Club centers around four women, each with a loved one—a brother, son, husband, fiancé—stationed overseas. As each woman learns to cope (or not cope) with her fears in her own way, they band together to offer each other friendship and mutual support through the tough times. Above all, they encourage each other to lean on Jesus.

“God knows the beginning and the end and every moment in between,” Robin explains. “Nothing enters the life of a follower of Jesus that is not caused or allowed by God as a means of changing our character to be more Christlike. We see only a tiny speck of time. God sees eternity.”

Much more than just a nostalgic look back at “the greatest generation,” The Victory Club has a lot of relevance for readers’ lives today. Robin reports, “As I write this a large contingent of Idaho National Guardsmen from my home state (Idaho) are serving in Iraq, and there are many local news stories about them. The local news is also full of stories about the families left behind, the sacrifices that they are making while husbands, dads, sons, wives, moms, daughters are absent.”

Robin feels that The Victory Club would make a thoughtful “thinking-of-you” gift for anyone who has a loved one in the military. “I wrote The Victory Club as part tribute and part encouragement to the loved ones who serve their country on the home front,” she says. “I want to pay tribute for how much they are required to give—emotionally, financially, physically, spiritually—while they wait. And I want to encourage them that they are not alone, that God sees and He cares. No matter what perils swirl around you today, remember that God will see you through if you put your trust in Him. Jesus doesn’t just bring victory into our lives in the midst of trouble. He is the victory.”
