Carol Stream, IL — Tyndale House Publishers announces an agreement with Gayle Haggard to publish her inspiring memoir, Why I Stayed, in January, 2010.
On November 2, 2006, Gayle Haggard’s life changed forever. That was the day her husband, Ted Haggard, founder and senior pastor of the mega New Life Church in Colorado Springs and the president of the National Association of Evangelicals, confessed to her the truth—he had been involved in sexual immorality. The Haggard family, their church, and the evangelical community shook as revelations unfolded in front of national media and a watching world.
Gayle and Ted Haggard have been guests on numerous network, nationally-syndicated shows and cable programs, and a powerful HBO documentary, The Trials of Ted Haggard, has aired forty times. The couple has shared about their experience and the steadfast faith that has sustained them, and interviewers have frequently asked Gayle: Why did you stay?
In Why I Stayed, Gayle walks us through the choices she made in her darkest hour. “This is my story of choosing to love my husband through some of the most difficult challenges any marriage could face,” said Mrs. Haggard. Out of this experience, she has discovered a newfound passion for the central message of the Bible—the liberating message of forgiveness and love. Her new book paints a picture of what less-than-perfect people, all over this world, desperately need.
“When we met with Gayle, we realized God was already using her story to touch the lives of thousands of people,” said Jon Farrar, nonfiction acquisition director. “We knew this story needed to be heard in its entirety. It’s an amazing story of the choices Gayle made in her darkest hours and how less-than-perfect people everywhere desperately need a community that provides healing and a path to restoration.”
After reading the manuscript, Mark Taylor, president of Tyndale House, commented, “I was very moved by Gayle’s story. It is a beautiful—though heart-wrenching—story of the crisis in her marriage and how (with the grace of God) she chose to love Ted, save her marriage, and protect her family. I am proud to have Why I Stayed come from Tyndale.”
Tyndale House will launch Why I Stayed by Gayle Haggard, written with Angela Hunt, in January, 2010 with a national promotional campaign, including an author tour.
Gayle Haggard is a speaker, teacher, and the wife of Ted Haggard. Together they grew the New Life Church in Colorado from a handful of people to a 14,000 member congregation, where Gayle directed the women’s ministries, teaching women of all ages and overseeing 150 women’s small groups. Today Gayle lives to share the hope and grace that strengthened her in her darkest hour.
